It seems there are more spots to be filled in a school than can be counted. So far, I have volunteered in classrooms, in the cafeteria, and in the art department. There is not a place I won't go. Trying to spread my name around the school in hopes that I may one day be hired, is a busy task. I have enjoyed each place I have worked. Yesterday I had the pleasure of working in the cafeteria, only to wake up today feeling like crud. Scratchy throat, sniffy nose, and a cough. I woke up speaking like a screech owl and everyone had their jokes. I took my temperature and I must have just broken a fever as I was sweating and the thermometer read 99.8.
This got me thinking, is this the place I really want to be working? It's bad enough when my kids come home with their icky germs. Now I had my first case of the yuckies! There are so many places that could use volunteers. Why did I choose the school? Probably 1 because my babies are there, well most of them. Number 2 it fills my days. 3 Possibly to get a job, whether it's in the school or not. The volunteering is giving me the volunteer hours.
I have to admit cafeteria duty was really fun. The kids can be themselves and can actually talk to you. Several of them gave me hugs, and who can resist a hug? Most of the kids are really sweet and most of them are forgetful. Forgetting their ketsup, Ranch dressing, or their silverware. It's just something everyone does, so we simply get those items for them and keep them from bouncing off the walls. The time goes by fairly quick and It was something I enjoyed. They have recently hired people to work in the cafeteria and so I feel kinda like the sore thumb. But there was a place for me so I stayed.
Waking up feeling like garbage I went no where today. As a matter of fact I stayed in my PJ's until I showered. Being that all these germs are fresh in my body, I will give myself a few more days of rest and head back to school on Monday with the kiddo's. I have had several teachers ask for my help, I go where ever the need is. Our public school systems need us. At our Open House tonight we learned that they had to cut back resources, to have funding to get new teachers. Obviously, I am not a teacher, but I feel if I can lighten the load for the ones who teach my children it just might help my child to excel. When the teacher has more time in the classroom to devote to the children, instead of preparing for the next lesson, it turns into a win win situation.
So why do I choose to volunteer at my kids school at least a few times a week? I feel an importance to the education of our children and helping those who mold our children into the students they are! So if you have free time, open yourself up to the idea of helping out the teachers. There are so many simple things you can do to lighten the load. Things that wouldn't seem like a big deal to you but will give teachers more time to do so much more for your children
